Fast forward six months…
Still working very hard, taking on project after project, feeling the accumulation of stress building up, but not getting any recognition for my efforts. My work ethic had become the norm in the eyes of my bosses.
Even getting snide remarks if instead of working 12hrs that day I would leave after 10.
The more work I completed, the more work I got… I was the go-to guy for anything too hard for others to figure out, at first I welcomed the challenge, then I started to despise it.
Over that weekend I decided something had to change…
I wasn’t enjoying my job, and it was taking up too much of my life.
My girlfriend (now wife) and I had just recently bought our first home, the first home owner’s grant was ending, it was $24k at the time when purchasing a new home.
We only had $5000 in savings, we borrowed $5000 off a relative and got my Dad to sign as the guarantor, needless to say, we were in a ton of debt.
And to make us even more reliant on our jobs…
We had planned a seven-week trip to Europe; all paid for with a personal loan of course.
I turned to the internet and started searching for “make money online,” “how to become my own boss,” “how to start a business” and more phrases like that.
Everything seemed hard; I was used to rules and guidelines, at least vague ones.
I came across franchises, which got my attention…
“You mean I could start my own business by following someone else’s proven plan?”
It was fool proof I thought. After many days and weeks of research, I decided on a company, gave them a call, and set up an appointment.
The sales guy that came made it seem really easy.
He asked me many questions and suggested that with my background in management I would be suited to what they called a “Regional Master Franchise,” which is helping to manage other franchisees in my territory, as well as signing up new franchisees.
Of course, the Master Franchise was a lot more expensive, six times as much in fact. But the return was a minimum of $180/week with only 1hr’s work.
I spoke to my girlfriend, who gave me her blessing and told me to take a chance…
So I applied for yet another bank loan to fund this new venture.
It also meant that we both would have to keep our jobs to service our debt and that I would have to make this new business work, outside of the normal hours of my current job.
On the surface over the next few months, everything seemed to be going along nicely, I had a few franchisees in my territory and growing, receiving royalties from each of them.
The problem was that the franchisees had a lot of trouble finding customers.
It wasn’t just in my territory, but all over Australia, the attrition rate for franchisees kept increasing.
I did what I could for each of the franchisees, but each of them struggled due to lack of customers and still having to pay me & the head office royalties every week regardless of their income.
The same pattern happened again and again. As new franchisees signed up – old ones left, disappointed and broke…
Around the same time, while still at my 9-5 job.
I also joined an MLM company (network marketing) figuring I was into health and fitness and could do with more money. Who doesn’t want more money right?
I just plain sucked at this.
I hated selling, and because I hadn’t made any money in MLM before it was hard to sell the dream to someone when I wasn’t sure myself if this whole process worked.
Feeling frustrated that my entrepreneurial efforts thus far hadn’t given me the financial freedom that had been working for all this time, in fact, the amount of time I was spending on these businesses was massively limiting my freedom.
I felt stuck.
I knew I wanted to be my own boss… but without getting better at lead generation or bettering my sales skills, I thought it was impossible.
I didn’t even know what SEO was at the time.
I started searching on Google again, this time with the keywords “How to get more customers,” “How to prospect,” “How to cold call” and finally “How to get traffic to a website” etc…
That last search term “How to get traffic to a website” lead me down a rabbit hole that I’m still falling into deeper and deeper today.
I learned what SEO was and that all the big companies were relying on it. Up until this point, I never thought twice about how a website was able to show up in the search results.
I came across a group in the US, read their website which had about 100 testimonials from people just like me, who had learned the skills of SEO and how it changed their lives.
I was intrigued…
I saw a link for a free webinar – signed up, and was amazed at the content and secrets they were giving away.
I watched another four free webinars, taking massive amounts of notes.
I wanted more, but they weren’t selling anything. I emailed them and they told me they’re a mastermind group, and you need to be invited in and pay a fee to join, but once you’re in, they’ll mentor you in everything SEO and starting a business.
I started applying the techniques I learned in the free webinars to a website I had – and they worked, I started moving up the ranks, to page 5, then page 4, page 3, 2.
I could see it was working already and I knew from the training that rankings take months if not years to get to page 1.
Anyways I ended up joining their mastermind group for $1000 per month; I’m still part of this mastermind today.
What I learned changed my life...
With my new-found passion, I worked and worked applying all these techniques to my website, as well as friends websites, rankings increased, and once I reached page 1, traffic on site kept increasing month after month.
I loved the new work I was doing as well as the potential of it all.
Fast forward a year…
…I was now doing only two days per week at my “9 to 5” job, and I sold the franchise business.
My digital marketing & SEO company, Bouncy Media was born, and ever since it’s been growing. Over the last few years our process has changed along with the Google algorithm, we’ve simplified our ranking strategies with techniques going back to basics and now, focus all our resources on our 5 STEP SYSTEM.
Not worrying about the latest hack or tactic…
You’ve probably seen people advertising “Rank your site in 24hrs”… and many other big promises like that.
I’m not saying these tactics do not work, a lot of them do.
I’ve tested so many… the problem is that results NEVER last. You might rank in 24hrs, but by next week you’re already on page 2, and in a month’s time you’re nowhere to be found.
So instead of spending time and energy on tactics we focus on the basics – and master them. The results are top Page 1 Rankings that last through algorithm changes.
